Being that yesterday was the official first day of Spring, surprisingly, it's a dreary rainy day in Southern California. Of course, I would like to have started this journey on an idyllic sunny Los Angeles day, nevertheless however, rain is a cleansing, a time for new beginnings. So today is just as good as any to start, and so it begins.
Inspired by the movie, Julie & Julia, I will read the 75 books on acting that have been collecting dust, piled high in my closet, for the next year. I don't know what will come out of it but one thing is for certain, doing what I have been doing hasn't worked. I have been bumbling around this industry, LOST. I do all the things an actor is suppose to do...classes, headshots, agents, auditions, scenes, tapes, cds, meditations, energy work, actors group and yet, there's something missing...like REALLY missing...at the core of all of this.
Via Cheryl Hunter's Success Seminar on Monday nights, it was Session #8 where I profoundly got related to what "Success Is For Me..." in the acting industry.
Who I've been before is someone who pretends to be driven but has really given up. Before, success in the acting world was about, who got the bookings, the auditions, the contacts, the connections, the money, the fame, that project, how they came up...What an overwhelming and losing context that constantly compares myself to others. I give all that crap up and am going back to the basics and building the foundation with my studies with brand new eyes. No more comparisons with others. This is on ME.
SUCCESS FOR ME IS studying my acting textbooks and creating my own technique/dissertation on acting that is uniquely my own. I am out to find out what works for me. I am out to bring integrity to my craft and ridiculously starting from the beginning.
More classes, workshops, etc. have not worked...because there has been this lingering feeling that I haven't done the work on my own... my own self discovery. Books are a passion and yet I have ignored them as the gateway to the acting world.
I'm keeping myself open and I don't know what things will come up for me in the next year however I will bring integrity, authenticity and truth to myself and this blog. I am doing this for myself and am keeping this blog as an accountability tool and record of what's to come.
I don't know who or if anyone will read this on a consistent basis and I do hope it offers something of value for you. I invite you to post a comment! Anything to add, improve, contribute, rant, disagree, support, encourage, discourage--all are welcome.
As I review the Wisdom Course on April 1st in Los Angeles, I am looking to upgrade my conversations around acting and getting back to the basics.
Onwards!
Something to Ponder:
What is success for you, in such a way, where you didn't have to compare yourself with anyone?
